What is Biochar Production?

Biochar production is a thermochemical conversion process in which biomass is heated under carefully controlled oxygen-limited conditions. Unlike conventional combustion, the biomass does not burn completely. Instead, thermal decomposition converts the feedstock into three principal product streams:

  • Carbon-rich Biochar
  • Combustible Pyrolysis Gases
  • Condensable Vapours

The recovered combustible gases can be utilized as a source of process heat, improving overall thermal efficiency and reducing dependence on external fuel after stable operating conditions are achieved.

Biomass is first prepared and dried before being heated in a controlled low-oxygen environment. During pyrolysis, the biomass decomposes into solid biochar, combustible gases and condensable vapours.

Biochar production commonly operates in the 400–700°Crange. Lower temperatures generally retain more volatile matter, while higher temperatures generally produce biochar with higher fixed-carbon content and greater aromaticity.

Suitable feedstocks include wood, sawdust, agricultural residues, rice husk, crop residues, coconut shells, bamboo and other biomass materials. Feedstock quality has a major impact on the final biochar properties.

The process generates three primary product streams:

  • Biochar – solid carbon-rich product.
  • Pyrolysis Gas – combustible gas.
  • Condensable Vapours – tar/oil/water-containing vapours.

The distribution depends on temperature, residence time, heating rate and feedstock characteristics.
